Help – My teen is always in their bedroom

In this month’s Maggie Moment, parenting author, educator and podcaster Maggie Dent shares practical tips for parents whose teenager is always in their bedroom.

This can be very normal behaviour during adolescence, as it often meets three important psychological needs of teenagers: the three C’s – connection, competence and control.

The challenge, however, is making sure there are still meaningful moments of connection throughout the week, where they stay engaged with family in some way.

There can be many reasons teens retreat to their rooms, so it’s important to find ways to come alongside them with curiosity and care. Sometimes, this may also mean gently stepping in with some boundaries.

Maggie suggests that whatever approach you take, remember to do it with lightness, kindness and lots of love.
